old_corfuThe old city of Corfu streches betwen the new and the old fortress behind walls. Most of the houses are stone made several stories high that survived war bombings and stand tall to tell  the tale of the city. Few of them that didn't make through the war gave their place to new constructions.

In Campielo Corfu's oldest neighborhood houses seem abandoned but are still used. The graphical laundry are hanged high from window to window. While house ladies chat away or throw a basket tied with a long rope in order to reach goods from the street.

Time seems to have stand still  in this side of town which you can easily looose yourself amongst the alays where careless children play around at the small squares.

A stroll down the city square Spianada reveals the pulse that beats in this town.

old_corfu2Young and old stroll up and down the narrow streets meeting friends for for coffee ath the famous Liston a french arched decorated set of buildings along Liston high street that houses cafeterias and restaurants where is the bussyest street all year round.

Under the arches Corfiots and visitors find refuge for some shade and relaxation during the summer. The streets with most commercial interest are Nikiforou Theotoki str, Eugeniou Voulgareos str, Michail Theotoki str, the Philarmonic str and the also known as Plati Kantouni (wide allay) called Moustoxidou Str.

There the visitor canm find many souvenirs, works of art, jewlery,and clothes.In the city square there is a stage for outdoor orchestra performances. The surrounding houses part of the multicultural architectural pazl that blend into a magnificent result. Elegant buildings with arched windows stone carved balconies and fine details give away the 4 centuries of the Venetian occupation. On the south end of the Spianada the ruins of the old Ionian Academy still standing reminding the time when Corfu was a vety important academic and cultural center. Construction works are now in progress rebuilding that accedemy in order to revive the academic feeling of the building as it will be used from the Ionian University.
